Chains & Sprockets
Chain Speed Calculator
Enter chain pitch, driver sprocket teeth, and sprocket RPM to calculate chain linear speed.
Inputs
Formula
Chain linear speed
Worked example
Using the default values shown in the calculator, the same formula gives the following result. This is a quick sanity check for the calculation, not a design recommendation.
Inputs
- Chain pitch
- 12.7 mm
- Driver sprocket teeth
- 19 teeth
- Driver sprocket speed
- 600 rpm
Result
- Chain speed
- 2.41 m/s

Frequently asked questions
Why does tooth count affect chain speed?
Each sprocket revolution advances the chain by approximately one chain pitch per engaged tooth around the sprocket.
Is this enough to select a chain?
No. Chain selection also depends on transmitted power, service factors, lubrication, sprocket size, and manufacturer ratings.
