Chains & Sprockets

Sprocket Torque Ratio Calculator

Enter input torque and both sprocket tooth counts to estimate the ideal torque multiplication or reduction before drivetrain losses.

Inputs

Formula

Ideal sprocket torque ratio

T2 = T1 * Z2 / Z1

Worked example

Using the default values shown in the calculator, the same formula gives the following result. This is a quick sanity check for the calculation, not a design recommendation.

Inputs

Input torque
20 N*m
Driver sprocket teeth
20 teeth
Driven sprocket teeth
60 teeth

Result

Ideal driven torque
60 N*m

Frequently asked questions

Does a larger driven sprocket increase torque?

Ideally, yes. Increasing driven tooth count relative to the driver reduces speed and raises torque by the same ratio.

Does this include chain efficiency?

No. It is an ideal kinematic result and does not subtract bearing, chain articulation, lubrication, or other drivetrain losses.
