Gears

Gear RPM Calculator

Enter driver speed and both gear tooth counts to calculate the ideal driven-shaft speed.

Inputs

Formula

Driven gear speed

n2 = n1 * Z1 / Z2

Worked example

Using the default values shown in the calculator, the same formula gives the following result. This is a quick sanity check for the calculation, not a design recommendation.

Inputs

Driver speed
1,450 rpm
Driver gear teeth
20 teeth
Driven gear teeth
60 teeth

Result

Driven speed
483.3 rpm

Frequently asked questions

Does this account for gear direction?

It calculates speed magnitude only. Two external gears rotate in opposite directions.

Can I use this for a multi-stage gearbox?

Apply each stage ratio in sequence or multiply stage ratios first, provided each stage is represented correctly.
