Carton Size Calculator

Choose an outer carton size for identical products with padding, gaps and orientation constraints. Compare SI/US results and review the method, assumptions and related references below.

Change any input to update the calculation. Unit changes preserve the physical quantity.

Assumptions & checks

Bounded uniform-grid packing heuristic, not a globally optimal mixed-item pack. It selects a box size; Cartons per Pallet packs existing boxes. Compression, cushioning design and shipping acceptance are not validated.

Formula

Choose an outer carton size for identical products with padding, gaps and orientation constraints

For each allowed orientation and nx,ny≤80, nz=ceil(N/(nxny)). Inner L=nx·itemL+(nx−1)gap+2padding, similarly W,H. Outer dimensions add 2wall. Minimize outer volume; tie-break by surface area. Worked example: A 200×100×80 mm item repeated 12 times is tested against upright rotations, 10 mm padding, 5 mm gaps, 3 mm walls and a 500 mm height cap.

Frequently asked questions

What does this result tell me?

Bounded uniform-grid packing heuristic, not a globally optimal mixed-item pack. It selects a box size; Cartons per Pallet packs existing boxes. Compression, cushioning design and shipping acceptance are not validated.

How can I check the calculation?

Worked example: A 200×100×80 mm item repeated 12 times is tested against upright rotations, 10 mm padding, 5 mm gaps, 3 mm walls and a 500 mm height cap. Review each stated input and unit; use project-specific values rather than treating the editable example as a requirement.
