Calculation breakdown

Result interpretation
Find gross shipment density or reverse target mass and shipping volume

Assumptions & checks

Use gross mass and loaded external envelope including pallets where applicable. This does not assign NMFC freight class, carrier tariffs or chargeable dimensional weight.

Formula

Find gross shipment density or reverse target mass and shipping volume

Freight density=gross shipping mass/loaded shipping volume. Reverse mass=density×volume; volume=mass/density. Worked example: 400 kg gross shipment / 2 m³ occupied shipping volume gives 200 kg/m³, approximately 12.486 lb/ft³.

Worked example

Using the default values shown in the calculator, the same formula gives the following result. This is a quick sanity check for the calculation, not a design recommendation.

Frequently asked questions

What does this result tell me?

Use gross mass and loaded external envelope including pallets where applicable. This does not assign NMFC freight class, carrier tariffs or chargeable dimensional weight.

How can I check the calculation?

Worked example: 400 kg gross shipment / 2 m³ occupied shipping volume gives 200 kg/m³, approximately 12.486 lb/ft³. Review each stated input and unit; use project-specific values rather than treating the editable example as a requirement.
